There’s NO Life after Rugby League in PNG-Mr Tonny Tawelo

The President of Ramu Rugby League Mr Tonny Tawelo said Rugby in PNG is dying at the fastest rate in the eyes of rugby league administrations at all level.

The National Body do not fund the smaller leagues in the Country for the administration of the sport. Most of their revenue comes from the Players’ registration fee but almost 90%-95% of the Players are struggling to pay the fees each year.

When the Players fail to pay their registration fees on timely bases, financially the league runs dry to run the league. This means the Local League Official take full responsibility running the league using their own resources.

I have spent lots of my personal money to support the league. There is no benefits in Rugby League and it’s a total personal sacrifice. If this trend continues, all the smaller leagues in the Country will die and the Biggest Game of ALL will become Smallest Game of ALL.

Most of the rural leagues are not functioning well as I speak he said. When there is northern zone trial, we just call 2-4 clubs play for the selection to send the team. This is not a right way operating a league, we should be picking a full team from the functioning league so that best players talents are expose.

The Ramu league is fortunate because we have the support of Ramu Agri-Industries and youths are stationed in one locality so we have running league yet we have difficulties in Player’s paying the registration fee each year.

Many times we do not receive Player’s registration fee on time to insure the players for the league calendar year. What we want from the National Body is ensure, the insurance of Players is carry over to new calendar year so that the Players and league kicks off on the smooth ground, otherwise, there are lots of problem collecting registrations fees in the beginning of the year.

He further said one major problem we’re facing is there is no life after rugby league. All the National Players –Kumul or PNG Hunters, after rugby league life, there is no life. Hence, he encourage all the school kids participating in school boys rugby league should put rugby on #10 of their priority list.
